Summer snowfields in the Cairngorms

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, Science, July 17 2008.

Last weekend I went for a walk on the Cairn Gorm – Ben Macdui plateau, primarily to locate an air wreck site near the summit of Ben Macdui (see the previous blog posting ‘The highest air wreck site in the whole British Isles?‘) but also to see how large the summer snowfields on the plateau… Read more »

An Sgarsoch and Carn Ealar

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, June 23 2008.

Last weekend I walked and cycled to the two summits of An Sgarsoch and Carn Ealar, in the southern Cairngorms, with Norma (who hadn’t used her bike for getting to remote summits before).

Puig Carlit, eastern Pyrenees

While on holiday in the South of France, I drove to the Pyrenees to try and climb the summit of Puig Carlit. At 2921m, Puig Carlit is not one of the major summits of the Pyrenees mountain chain (the highest is Pico d’Aneto at 3404m) but it is the highest in this particular region.

These munro summits are considered to be amongst the most remote and inaccessible of any…. Read more »

Ben Wyvis

Two weeks ago I walked up Ben Wyvis near Inverness with Lee, an old friend from school. We had a fantastic warm day for it, with perfectly blue skies. The top of Ben Wyvis is a long, broad and grassy ridge that makes for great walking. With the clear air we had that day it… Read more »

Glen Feshie

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, May 6 2008.

Yesterday I went for a long trip (about 36km round-trip) along the length of Glen Feshie in the Cairngorms. From Tolvah I cycled along the good tarmac road to Carnachuin (great views of Carn Ban Mor and Coire Garbhlach), crossed a bridge over the river Feshie (which looks like it might fall down very soon),… Read more »
