Porcupine Tree - for the fourth time!

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Last Friday, Lesley and I travelled through to Glasgow to see Porcupine Tree at the O2 ABC venue (previously known as just ‘the ABC’). This is the fourth time I’ve seen Porcupine Tree live (see my two previous blog postings, ‘Porcupine Tree - again‘ and ‘Porcupine Tree‘).

AC/DC

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Yesterday Lesley and I went to Hampden Park in Glasgow to see AC/DC. It was the final concert in the European leg of their Black Ice tour, and it was an absolutely amazing show, much better than the Iron Maiden concert Lesley and I saw at Twickenham stadium last year.

Mogwai

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Last night I went to see the Glasgow band Mogwai at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. Mogwai are a very strange band - they hardly ever have vocals in any of their music and seem to be willfully difficult to approach on an emotional level. I think half of their music is sublime, trippy guitar rock that manages to be both soothing and energetic, with obvious influences from My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain and perhaps contrastingly, Brian Eno and Moby.

Queen

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Last weekend Lesley and I travelled through to Glasgow to see Queen at the SECC. Lesley and I are both Queen fans going back a long way, and we have both been a bit fanatical about them at certain points in our lives (me during the early eighties, and her since the late eighties).

London; the Groucho Club and Iron Maiden at Twickenham

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Lesley and I spent last weekend in London. We spent Friday evening in the Groucho Club in Soho, drinking expensive cocktails and looking out for celebs (I only saw one, Stephen Merchant).

Porcupine Tree - again

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Last night I travelled through to Glasgow to see Porcupine Tree (the best band in the world that no-one’s heard of) at the Carling Academy. It was the third time I’ve been to a gig by this band in 16 months, and they just seem to get better and better (see my previous blog posting ‘Porcupine Tree‘).

Porcupine Tree

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

Last Wednesday, Lesley, Ali and I went through to Glasgow for the evening to see Porcupine Tree at the ABC venue. Lesley has also written about the gig on her blog here. Porcupine tree are an amazing band, playing what could be described as contemporary prog rock, but with a very heavy guitar sound. They have just released a new album, Fear of a Blank Planet, which they played all the songs from at the gig.

Maiden Scotland and Geal-charn Mor

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

On Saturday I went to see Maiden Scotland, an Iron Maiden tribute band with Lesley at the Studio 24 venue in Edinburgh. She has written about it on her blog here. It was a good gig with some great Iron Maiden tracks played the way they should be, and Maiden Scotland really sounded good. The singer particularly brought the screaming Bruce Dickinson vocals off well. I really recommend that any Maiden fan goes to see them play. Standout tracks for me were Fear of the Dark and Phantom of the Opera.

The Australian Pink Floyd and The Whangie

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Last Saturday (as well as moving flat) I went to the Glasgow SECC to see the The Australian Pink Floyd (a Pink Floyd tribute band) with Lesley. We’ve seen this band once before, and they’re probably the closest that you can get to seeing the real thing live, so closely do they recreate the sound and stage show. Highlights for me were seeing the The Gunner’s Dream (from the Final Cut album), and a section of the Animals album performed, and an inflatable pig and kangaroo(!). Lesley has also blogged about the show here.
