The 2 big ones were taken in Biggar circa September 1956 when HM was en route to open
the new Daer Water Scheme. The Bn was at Redford, having returned from Buxtehude. We
nearly got sent to the Suez fiasco.
The 100 strong guard contained representatives from all Coys . The A Coy reps
were photoed near the forming up point near the old Biggar smiddy and library. From memory
names l to r :Nelson, O'Kane, McGeown , Beatts, Laird, Patterson,Murdoch, Macallum, ?,
Johnston. 8 of us were National Servicemen.
Officers of the guard were Mackinnon( Depot) and Baynes (2 i/c A Coy).
Senior NCOs were CSM Jimmy Murray and Sgt Haslam.
I was the only member of the guard who hailed from the Covenanting lands of upper
Lanarkshire.
The names in photo below are
Johnston
Macallum
Murdoch
We were skylarking whilst on schemes on Luneberg Heath, doing demos for
the Nato Staff College...mostly Bn in attack supported by armour (from memory Q O Irish
Hussars). We lived in bivouacs and when those tanks were on the move at night, it was a
bit frightening. One night one of them roared through a camp cookhouse (fortunately
empty).
