Ian Smith: Ian was a member of the Signal Platoon - quite a smart chap, didn't much like the Army, but still soldiered on

George Dearie and I went through basic training at Lanark together.  He was the well deserved honour student in Ramillies Platoon and was an extremely good signals NCO

Part of the security duties of the Cameronians in Aden was protecting the families of servicemen and other civilians. The Jocks were at their most hightened state of alertness when they had to escort the children to and from school. I'd pity any person that tried to harm the children, including the native children.

tn_booted suited ready for home.jpg (6816 bytes)

Not in very good condition but I have had a crack at cleaning up a few and I am attaching them. The digging -in occurred after the camp was mortared from the shanty town next to it, fortunately the Bn was all up in the Radfan Mountains. I had come down for the weekend and was just in time to dodge mortars!! Beating the retreat 1967 in Ma'alla Main street in front of the married quarters was very well received. The booted and suited pic shows me on the left with one of the CQMSs and a Corporal. We had all been to a tailor and bought new clothes to fly home in!

Nick also donated a copy of a citation which was presented to every member of the Regiment who served in Aden. He said "Col Dow wrote to us all individually".
