The picture was taken on the roof of the school, with the rest of the pupils congregated on the playground below, in the spring of 1951.

Gateside pupils had corresponded on a pen pal basis with Cohuna school in Victoria, Australia and gifted a Saltire flag.

This gesture was reciprocated by the gift of an Australian flag  , presented by the two boys on the right of the picture, John Herrin & Gordon Farrent from Victoria on an educational visit to this country.
